Since a variety of line types may be terminated in the Cisco AS series, Cisco uses modem ISDN channel aggregation (MICA) technology to support a wide range of data call termination types. MICA technology provides DSP-based modem termination for any data link protocol offered on a 56/64-kbps channel. The benefits of using DSP technology are twofold. Since modem technology is constantly evolving, these DSPs are programmable and allow for rapid adoption of new standards as well as customized features. Secondly, with DSP technology, the dial shelf can process any data link-oriented tasks that are inherently CPU intensive. Thus the router CPU may concentrate on processing routing tasks, WAN optimization, management, security, and QoS features. Read More
