Probably worth the money
Author's Rating:
I finally broke down and bought a TiVo after trying some DIY solutions. Although SageTV, BeyondTV, etc. do well enough for SD TV, I found trying to record HD episodes was really difficult. TiVo's user interface is pretty slick, and if you can get your cable guy to install the cablecards right after 2 or 3 tries, it's definitely worth the money, subscription and all, EXCEPT....there are now rumors floating around on the tech blogs that the is a auto-delete flag feature. That is to say, the recorded program will auto-delete itself after a certain period of time (in this case approximately 2-3 hours after it was recorded). Assuming this is for real, I would have to say that it is a real deal-breaker. The advantage of TiVo is supposed to be time-shifting. I would think that this kind of auto-deletion defeats that whole purpose.

It was Not What I Wanted

I was not aware of all of the associated costs to fully use this product. So I cannot evaluate it fairly. I made a mistake in ordering it. I simply wanted to record HD TV shows, Nothing more.

Works Great, When It's Working
Author's Rating:
I bought this Tivo DVR as an alternative to using the Scientific Atlanta cable box DVR that is issued by the cable provider. I found one, and only one, major advantage to using the Tivo DVR rather than a cable company DVR--the Tivo DVR is intuitive, simple, and fun to use. If you or others in your household are inept with electronic gadgetry (could never figure out how to program a VCR) then you will particularly appreciate the Tivo DVR over the one provided by the Cable Company.
Unfortunately, I found several downsides to using the Tivo. But, I hate the cable company issued DVR so much, I tolerate them.
1) Cost. You have to buy the Tivo and if it breaks down it's your problem and expense. On the other hand, there's no up front cost for renting the cable box DVR from the cable company, only monthly rental fees. Cost of the Tivo service and the CableCARD rental combined is slightly more than the cost of renting a cable box DVR from the cable company.
2) Setup and Maintenance. As the caption says--It works great when it's working. But getting it to work and stay working has been a challenge. With a cable box DVR, the cable company installs it, makes sure it's working, and sends someone to your house to repair or replace it if stops working--all at no additional charge. This is not the case with the Tivo DVR. You have to install it yourself then contact the cable company to insert and configure the Cable CARD's. This is where the migraines start. The support provided by the Cable Company does not go beyond inserting the CableCARD's and activating them. If your Tivo is not working after they do that, as in my case, you have to contact Tivo tech support for help. It can be difficult or impossible to determine whether the problem lies with the Tivo DVR or the CableCARD's. You have different support contacts for each of them, pointing fingers at each other, and unwilling to cooperate with each other. After spending hours on the phone holding and following instructions from Tivo and Cablevision, and a lot of trial and error type troubleshooting, alas it started working! But, about 8 weeks later, as the memories of the installation ordeal were starting to fade, it stopped working and a new, similar ordeal began. It turned out that the CableCARD's were the culprit and needed to be replaced. The Cablevision technician explained "they just go bad every now and then". Alas, the Tivo started working great again, for a about 5 weeks until the next troubleshooting escapade ensued. This time it turned out that the Tivo itself had broken down and needed to be replaced--just 1 week after the warranty expired. Tivo offered to replace it at a discount, but when I threatened to cancel my account, they agreed to replace it for free. When I received the replacement, I had to contact the cable company to re-configure the CableCARD's to work with the new unit. Begin reading this paragraph again from the beginning to see how it went. Groundhog Day!!!

Still the best DVR out there
Author's Rating:
I've used a Tivo series 2 for more than 3 years now & loved it. But with my new big beautiful 50" plasma it was time for hi-def. That meant getting this new hi-def Tivo, & I was somewhat worried because of all the cablecard issues that some people have been having.
Well things went off just about perfect...the Cox cable guy came when they said they would, he installed the single multi-stream card, went thru some setup procedures, then called the office for them to do their authorization thing...and nothing - just a black screen. Called again spoke to somebody else - they did something & bang every thing was there in BEAUTIFUL HD. The whole thing took about 1 hour
So to sum up: 1) HD is super...it's such a bother to watch standard def now,,,and
2) Tivo is still the best DVR out there. It's features, convenience & ease of use put it at the top of it's class.

Can't Live Without TiVO
Author's Rating:
If you ever get a TiVO, you won't know how you lived without it for so long. In our case, once you get a dual tuner HD TiVO, it is even better. This TiVO has been great so far. The HD quality is great. The dual tuners are great. CableCards - not so great, but that is not TiVO's fault. Took Comcast a couple of visits to get CableCards that would work in both slots, but now that it is working, it is definitely a nice setup. Only think I could complain about is the remote that comes with it. Very mushy feeling. I would highly recommend the GloRemote from TiVO - much better option. Otherwise, no complains.

The Best TiVo Yet, and by default the Best DVR Ever
Author's Rating:
I recently upgraded from a Series 2 Single tuner TiVo to the TiVo HD. I held off until now because I didn't have an HDTV. Once I got the HDTV the Series 2 standard def just wasn't cutting it on 55 inches. An HD DVR became a necessity. As far as I was concerened there was no option but to get another TiVo. I didn't go Series 3 because it seams like not much more for more than twice the price.
TiVo HD has exceeded my expectations from the start. Getting setup with a cable card was as easy as pulling the M-Card I already had out of my TV and plugging it into my TiVo. Done. Flawless.
This is my first dual-tuner dvr and the TiVo HD handles it so smoothly you don't even realize it's recording more than one thing at a time.
It supports up to 1080i which is the limit of my TV so the lack of 1080p isn't an issue. Especially since as far as I know there is no TV in 1080p. (could be wrong)
The picture quality is as good as my HD cable has ever looked. And the 20 hrs of hd storage hasn't proved to be a limitation yet. If it becomes a problem come fall I can always pick up the My DVR expander.
I'm not even going to mention all the features that have always been in a TiVo. Don't go with the cable company's dvr. Do yourself a favor. Pick up TiVo HD.

return to tivo
Author's Rating:
After switching from Tivo to Fios, to get HD, I've returned to the fold with the new lower priced HD Tivo unit. What a hassle it was to get Verizon to come out with the cable cards! After getting everything set up, the Tivo box works as I'd hoped with the same interface. In addition to HD, the other reason for shifting to Tivo is that you can access your mp3 music files stored on your networked computer from Tivo. If you have Tivo attached to your receiver in your family room, you can play your music thru it (an old feature, but still a nice one). The cost for the two required cable cards is $8, which makes the Tivo box more expensive than the Verizon alternative, but it is still a better deal. One small complaint - it would be nice to have a small LCD panel on the box to show the time.
